Instead of paying the standard posted rate at each crossing, carriers open an account, prepay their tolls, and receive a discounted per-axle rate on commercial trucks. It is built for fleets and owner-operators who cross often enough that a small per-trip discount adds up.
The Discount, in Numbers
Trucks on the Gordie Howe International Bridge are billed per axle. Breakaway changes the per-axle rate:
- Standard truck rate: $12.00 CAD / $8.75 USD per axle
- Breakaway truck rate: $9.60 CAD / $6.90 USD per axle
That is a $2.40 CAD ($1.85 USD) saving per axle on every crossing. For the common 5-axle tractor-trailer:
- Standard: 5 × $12.00 CAD = $60.00 CAD ($43.75 USD)

The per-trip number looks modest until you multiply it by how often trucks actually cross. Consider a 5-axle truck running the corridor twice a day, five days a week:

Now scale it:
- 10 trucks: ~$60,000 CAD/year in toll savings
- 25 trucks: ~$150,000 CAD/year

A Breakaway account saves you money on tolls, but it does nothing for your customs obligation. Every commercial crossing still requires an advance electronic manifest — a CBP ACE eManifest going into the US, or a CBSA ACI eManifest coming into Canada, filed at least an hour before arrival.
