For decades, trucks crossing between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan had one bridge option: the Ambassador Bridge. With the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, carriers finally have a choice — and the first question every dispatcher asks is the obvious one: which one is cheaper for a truck? This post compares the two crossings on toll cost, using the same 5-axle tractor-trailer for an apples-to-apples number.
You can run your own rig through the Gordie Howe Bridge Toll Calculator at any axle count. Below is the side-by-side.
The Headline Number
For a standard 5-axle tractor-trailer:
- Gordie Howe International Bridge (standard): $43.75 USD ($60.00 CAD)
- Gordie Howe International Bridge (Breakaway account): $34.50 USD ($48.00 CAD)
- Ambassador Bridge (A-Pass / E-ZPass): roughly $75 USD
On the toll line alone, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is materially cheaper — about $30 USD less per crossing at the standard rate, and around $40 USD less on a Breakaway account. Over hundreds of crossings a year, that gap is real money.
Why the Difference? Per-Axle Rates
Both bridges bill commercial trucks per axle, but the per-axle rate is very different.
The Ambassador Bridge charges roughly $15 USD per axle for trucks using A-Pass or E-ZPass. Five axles at $15 USD is about $75 USD.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge charges $8.75 USD per axle at the standard rate — $6.90 USD on a Breakaway account. Five axles at $8.75 USD is $43.75 USD; at $6.90 USD it is $34.50 USD.
Because both scale with axle count, the gap widens for heavier combinations. A 6-axle unit saves even more on the Gordie Howe span than a 5-axle unit does, simply because you are multiplying a larger per-axle discount across more axles.
What Is Breakaway, and Does the Ambassador Bridge Have an Equivalent?
Breakaway is the Gordie Howe International Bridge's prepaid business-account program. Carriers who open an account and prepay their tolls drop from $12.00 CAD to $9.60 CAD per axle (from $8.75 USD to $6.90 USD). It is specifically designed for commercial fleets that cross often.
The Ambassador Bridge's discounted commercial rate is accessed through A-Pass and E-ZPass transponder programs. Both bridges reward prepaid, account-based crossing over cash, but the Gordie Howe account rate lands well below the Ambassador transponder rate on a per-axle basis. Cost Is Not the Only Factor
Toll price is the easiest number to compare, but it is not the whole decision. When choosing between the two crossings, dispatchers also weigh:
- Approach roads. The Gordie Howe International Bridge connects directly to Highway 401 on the Canadian side and Interstate 75 on the US side, avoiding city-street plaza approaches.
- Plaza capacity and wait times. A newer, larger inspection plaza can mean shorter queues at peak — though wait times shift daily. Check live commercial wait times before you commit a driver to a lane.
- Broker location. Your customs broker's PARS/PAPS setup and preferred port can make one crossing operationally simpler than the other.
- Trusted-trader lanes. FAST-approved carriers should confirm dedicated-lane availability at whichever plaza they use.
Whichever Bridge You Pick, You Still File an eManifest
Switching bridges does not change your customs obligation. A truck crossing either span into the US must file a CBP ACE eManifest; a truck entering Canada must file a CBSA ACI eManifest — both at least one hour before arrival. The bridge you choose is a toll-and-logistics decision; the eManifest is mandatory regardless. Full details are in Crossing the Gordie Howe Bridge: eManifest, ACE & ACI Requirements for Truckers, and the complete toll picture is in our 2026 Gordie Howe truck toll guide.
The Bottom Line
On toll cost, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is roughly $43.75 USD versus about $75 USD for a 5-axle unit at the rates compared here, and less again on a Breakaway account. Factor in the direct 401-to-I-75 connection when deciding whether it fits your route.
